These two off-the-beaten-path G. Schirmer anthologies of intermediate level music for solo recorder and keyboard offer extremely useful and diverse assortments of both original music and idiomatic arrangements at a bargain price. They are of slightly greater musical and technical difficulty than the second volumes of the Bergmann anthologies. For example, the alto volume includes two pieces from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, complete baroque sonatas (with excellent keyboard realizations!) by Vivaldi, Handel, and Barsanti, a Bach organ trio sonata arrangement, three movements from Telemann's famous Suite in A minor, and arrangements of music by Domenico Scarlatti, Gluck, Haydn, Bizet, and Tchaikowsky. This anthology would be a bargain if it only contained the three complete baroque sonatas!

These three publications are extremely useful anthologies of music for recorder trio. They contain a wealth of pieces carefully chosen and edited so that they may be played not only by the standard SAT trio combination, but also on SSA instruments, for which little quality music is available. These inexpensive volumes may well be the best values in music for recorder trio currently available.

The Learning Unlimited "Let's Play Recorder" series of tunebooks published by Hal Leonard offers an wealth of highly useful arrangements of everything from Bach and Christmas music to pop, Broadway, and movie tunes. The basic editorial policy is innovative and interesting: each tune is presented for soprano recorder, with an optional second harmony part which can be played on a second soprano or alto recorder; some pieces sound great on two tenors or tenor and bass. Chords symbols are also included, so that the solo or duet can be accompanied on guitar or keyboard by any player with a rudimentary knowledge of harmony. These arrangements are extremely well done and offer the recorder player an excellent opportunity to have some fun and explore alternative musical materials.

Solo recorder accompanied by guitar is one of the most satisfying chamber music combinations. Unfortunately, there are relatively few editions of music for recorder and guitar, and most of those are in outrageously expensive European and Japanese publications. These inexpensive anthologies of music arranged for solo soprano or tenor recorder and guitar go a long way towards filling that gap.

These are monumental anthologies of famous classical, holiday, and pop tunes at bargain prices that are guaranteed to provide hours, months, and years of fun and entertainment for all instrumentalists.
